Helldivers 2 launched last week and immediately became one of the most-played games on Steam, a turn of events that appears to have caught even its developer off guard.
Arrowhead Game Studios’ co-operative shooter pulled in over 300,000 concurrent players on PC within days of release, a figure that demolished the studio’s infrastructure. Matchmaking broke, missions failed to load, and players were locked in login queues for hours. For a game from a relatively small Swedish studio, this is the definition of a good problem.
CEO Johan Pilestedt posted directly on social media to address the situation: “We are working as fast as we can to increase the server capacity. Thank you for your patience. I’m sorry for the inconvenience.” The transparency was well-received; the wait times, less so.
The reasons for the success are worth examining. Helldivers 2 does not look, on paper, like a mainstream hit. It is a third-person co-operative shooter with a deliberately satirical tone, built around coordinated team play and punishing friendly fire. The original Helldivers was a twin-stick shooter with a modest following. The sequel’s pitch, an extraction shooter where four players spread democracy across the galaxy in the most violent possible terms, looked niche.
What appears to have happened is viral word of mouth. Clips of friendly fire incidents, failed stratagems, and spectacular co-operative play spread quickly, particularly on shorter-form video platforms. The loop of completing missions, upgrading equipment, and returning to an increasingly hostile galaxy turned out to be enormously compelling at the price point.
The server issues have not dampened enthusiasm. Current Steam reviews sit at “Very Positive” and the playerbase appears to have patience for a studio that is communicating clearly and working to expand capacity rapidly.
Arrowhead announced capacity increases over the weekend and the situation is improving, though peak hours remain congested. The game is available on PS5 and PC. Cross-play between the two platforms is functional when servers cooperate.
We will have a full review once the server situation stabilises enough to complete an extended session without interruption.
